Hello, Julie Christensen
I "discovered" you in 1988 when I saw your Oslo-concert with Leonard Cohen on Norwegian TV. By that time I was working on The Bear Island( a small island with a meteorological station with a crew of 11 men and 1 woman halfway between Norway and Spitzbergen in the Barents Sea, 74.5 degrees north, 19 degrees east ).
It was not only me among the crew on the weather station who liked your appearance with Cohen. I had one colleague that used to run the video tape from the concert MANY times each day. He was 61 at that time and his first name was Bjarne. His favorite track on the tape was 'Take this waltz', and he thought that you sang SO beautiful( and looked beautiful, too ) on that special song that he had to hear and see it many times a day. His colleagues on the station, except for me, of course, thought that he overdid the videowatching(only the Cohen-concert) a little!
That was 16 years ago. I was 35 at that time, born in 1953. I recently read in a news paper that Bjarne died not so long ago. He lived on his own in the north of Norway, but also owned a small cottage only 30 km north of Oslo, in the valley Hakadal(where I live). A young family here on my job recently bought Bjarnes cottage from his relatives.
When I heard that Bjarnes cottage had been sold, and that I knew the family who bought it, I had to tell them that I worked together with Bjarne from November 1987 to june 1988 on the Bear Island. Bjarne had left behind some personal belongings in the cottage, and the young couple(who both work here on the Meteorological Institute) wanted to know more about the previous owner. I told them of his great love for your performance with Leonard Cohen in 1988 here in Oslo and of course many other things.
I would be really great to have the Oslo concert on video tape, but I guess it is almost impossible to get hold of it after so many years. Do you have any DVD or video tapes from one of your concerts in 1988 with Leonard Cohen?
Best wishes from
Henning Halvorsen
Henning,
Thank you for your touching note. I have that video, but can't watch it because it is in PAL format, not NTSC. Have been wanting to txfr it for many years, and now have an excuse to do it, I guess. It may take awhile, but be patient; I will try to burn a DVD for you. I too remember that as a memorable concert. I will be at the Brighton Festival outside London in a couple weeks for a Cohen tribute, but I'm afraid both shows are sold out. I hope you are enjoying your life; I remember the Bergen area as being exquisite. Take care.
